Microsoft says administrators can use quick machine recovery on Windows Server 2025 after installing the October 2026 security update. The feature is designed to help restore systems affected by certain widespread boot failures, but it depends on Windows Update and does not guarantee a repair.
Confirmed and not confirmed
Confirmed
- Microsoft says the October 2026 security update extends quick machine recovery to Windows Server 2025.
- Cloud remediation uses a secure, connected Windows Recovery Environment and scans Windows Update for remediation options.
- Cloud remediation is disabled by default on Windows Server 2025.
- Windows Server 2025 uses Windows Update remediations only. It does not use WSUS or offline update sources for quick machine recovery.
Not confirmed
- Quick machine recovery does not fix every boot problem.
- The feature does not remove a server’s dependence on an available and applicable Microsoft remediation.
What quick machine recovery support changes
Microsoft announced in October 2026 that administrators could use quick machine recovery on Windows Server 2025 after installing that month’s security update. The update is the stated prerequisite for this support.
The feature is aimed at devices with widespread boot issues. If Windows repeatedly fails to start, quick machine recovery can enter the Windows Recovery Environment and look for an applicable remediation through Windows Update. Microsoft says Microsoft support can then adjust settings or remove problematic drivers or updates in eligible scenarios.
Microsoft introduced the feature in November 2024 as part of its Windows Resiliency Initiative at Ignite 2024. The company had seen the need for a broader recovery response after a faulty CrowdStrike Falcon update left millions of Windows devices unable to boot in July 2024. Testing began in the Windows Insiders Beta Channel in late March 2025.
What the two policy controls change
| Control | What Microsoft documents it to change | What it does not claim to do | Environment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Cloud Remediation | Controls whether devices can connect to the network and use Windows Update for cloud remediation during recovery. | Microsoft may have no fix, or its fix may not apply to the server. | Windows Server 2025 requires an explicit configuration change when administrators want to enable cloud remediation. |
| Enable Auto Remediation | Controls whether the device can automatically attempt a remediation. If it is disabled or not configured, the device requires manual intervention to continue recovery. | Other recovery resources differ from cloud quick machine recovery, and these settings don’t disable all of them. | Domain administrators must have permission to edit the GPO and link it to the intended organizational unit. Local administrators use the Local Group Policy Editor on the target server. |
Microsoft also states that Not Configured is not an explicit off switch. It returns control to local recovery settings or the edition default, so an organization that needs the capability disabled should verify the effective policy rather than assume that the default has enforced that choice.
For Windows Server 2025, Microsoft says QMR depends on Windows Update-based remediations only. WSUS or an offline update source will not supply the remediation packages for this feature. Account for that dependency before relying on cloud remediation.
How to check a small-business server
- Confirm the server’s operating system and current recovery configuration.
- Review the local or domain Group Policy settings under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Quick Machine Recovery. Decide whether cloud remediation should be enabled and whether automatic remediation should be allowed.
- Confirm that administrators can reach the server through an out-of-band console or another recovery path. QMR is intended to reduce the need for physical access, but the feature may not find a solution.
- Validate backups before a production test or incident. Keep the Windows Server edition, OS build, installed update details, effective policy states, Group Policy results and recovery settings available for support requests, as Microsoft recommends.
Microsoft’s documentation describes QMR as a best-effort feature. It may not resolve every issue because Microsoft may not have released a remediation, or the available remediation may not apply to the affected device.
